A Taste of History: Visiting the Guinness Storehouse in Dublin

Updated: Nov 16, 2023

When you think of Dublin, certain iconic images spring to mind: cobbled streets, lively pubs, and of course, a pint of the world-famous Guinness Stout. But to truly understand the essence of this revered Irish brew, one must embark on a pilgrimage to the Guinness Storehouse in the heart of Dublin.

A Journey Through History - The Guinness Storehouse

It's more than just a brewery tour; it's a voyage through time and a celebration of a legendary legacy. Housed at the historic St. James's Gate Brewery, as you step through the doors, this seven-story visitor experience immerses you in the history, craftsmanship, and culture that make Guinness an Irish institution.

Each floor of the Storehouse reveals a different aspect of Guinness's story, from the ingredients used and the brewing process to the iconic advertising campaigns that have made it a global brand.

Pouring the Perfect Pint & The Tasting Experience

One of the highlights of the tour is the opportunity to learn how to pour the perfect pint of Guinness.

Under the guidance of expert staff, you'll discover the secrets behind the two-part pour, watching in awe as the rich, dark liquid settles to form that signature creamy head. Once you've mastered this art, you'll appreciate each pint you enjoy even more.

In the tasting rooms, you'll have the chance to savour the distinct flavours of Guinness and even learn how to properly taste and appreciate the beer's complex notes of roasted malt, coffee, and chocolate. But there's a twist to this tale. Among the more traditional tasting options, there's a unique Irish tradition worth trying: Guinness with blackcurrant.

Known locally as a "Guinness & Black" this concoction involves adding a dash of blackcurrant cordial to your pint. The result is a delightful blend of sweet and tart that enhances the beer's natural flavors. It's a refreshing alternative for those looking to experience Guinness in a new light, and it's surprisingly delightful. (I'd been recommended this by guys from my work and it definitely was a favourite!)

Gravity Bar: A Toast to Dublin

As you reach the pinnacle of your Guinness Storehouse journey, you'll find yourself at the Gravity Bar, 360-degree panoramic views of Dublin on the seventh floor. This is where you'll enjoy your included pint of Guinness, and there's no better place to do it. Sip your stout while taking in breathtaking views of the city's rooftops, landmarks, and the rolling hills beyond. On the windows you'll find information about each site of interest!

The Guinness Storehouse is more than just a tourist attraction; it's a testament to Ireland's rich brewing heritage and the spirit of its people. It's a place where history and craftsmanship come together in each pint poured. So, when you find yourself in Dublin, raise a glass to Arthur Guinness and the legacy he created, and don't forget to try that Guinness and Black – a unique twist that's pure Irish magic in a glass.
